Tankar från 39:e gatan

Jag sitter klistrad framför CNN och kan inte sluta titta. Det är något ofattbart vackert över hur Egyptens befolkning står upp mot årtionden av förtryck och förnedring. Visst kommer det att vara väldigt många problem på vägen mot en demokrati och mycket kan gå snett. Men det här är ett första steg och för att parafrasera John F Kennedy: I dag är vi alla egyptier.

Jag tycker att en av de absolut bästa ”experterna” på Egypten som CNN har haft i studion varje dag de senaste veckorna är professorn Fouad Ajami, som syns på TV-skärmen ovan. Om de i USA, där han själv bor, som tror att Egypten kan bli ett nytt Iran sa han idag:

”It’s a real moral embarrassment in this country that many are second guessing the Egyptians. Will they create decent politics? Will they fall into a theocracy? Will they break peace with Israel? Will the squander the new freedom and the kind of new order they have gained?

We must trust people with their own history. This is really the lesson of Tahrir Square. We must leave it to them. Every time we wrote them off, they surprised us. Every time Mubarak thought he scared them, they came back in larger numbers. We must trust the willingness of the Egyptians and the ability of the Egyptians to keep their own world intact and to spawn a new and decent country for themselves and their children.”

Förhoppningsvis har han rätt.
